Message from the Head

Well, it’s certainly clear that Brockton School is on the radar of prospective families looking for schools for their children. Since our last Open House in early February we have been inundated with calls, inquiries and meetings from and with parents who are seriously looking at making a change.

I have been involved in up to 3 admissions meetings a day this week. This means I’m struggling to get much other work done, but that is a happy problem! The majority of people I am meeting with are looking for a small, nurturing school like Brockton and, happily, need look no further.

You may see a number of visiting students in the school over the next few weeks. You may also see new parent faces as they are dropping off or picking up these visiting students. Please do not hesitate to welcome them and offer to answer any questions they may have about being a parent at Brockton. If you see me taking a prospective parent on a tour please don’t feel shy about stopping us and saying “hi” and “welcome” and offering to chat with them if they would like.

At our Board meeting last night one of the Directors commented how attracting new students in to the school is very much a team effort. He is so right. We are a team and one of the best teams I’ve ever been on!
Thank you for your cooperation and support.<img src="http://www.brocktonschool.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/headsignv3.jpg" alt="sign" title="sign" width="213" height="88" border="none" align="right" size-full wp-image-644" />

School News

Approaches to Learning Parent Information Night – Wednesday, March 10th - 7pm

Next Thursday, March 10th the MYP team will be giving a presentation to Brockton parents on a pivotal aspect of the MYP programme - Approaches to Learning. In a nutshell Approaches to Learning addresses the questions: How do I learn, think, communicate, work with others, organize myself, access and use information, reflect? In this workshop parents will discover what key skills students learn through this part of the programme and how as a school and as parents we can help students to master them. If you are interested in attending this session I would please ask that you RSVP to the school office so that we can prepare appropriate numbers of resources.

If you have any questions regarding this workshop please do not hesitate to either ask me at school or send me an email -

New UOI in Kindergarten!

The Kindergarten class has started a new Unit of Inquiry, What’s the Matter! The central idea for the unit is that “People find unique and practical uses from their exploration of natural and manmade materials”. To gain a better understanding of “matter”, we will become scientists exploring our world and conducting experiments! We will also invite a Scientist to visit our classroom. The Kindergarten class will be leading next week’s assembly on Thursday, March 11th!

Mrs. Epp

Grade 2 Field Trip- Seymour Hatchery
The Grade 2 class will be going on a field trip to the Seymour Hatchery on Wednesday, March 17. This trip will wind up our Unit of Inquiry about the life cycles of living things. We will take part in a hatchery tour, conduct a stream survey, and participate in workshops about forest ecology and aquatic insects.

We will be leaving the school shortly before 9:00am and return to the school around 2:00pm by parent drivers. Please pack a snack, a lunch that does not require reheating, and a water bottle. The students should also dress for the weather (rain boots, waterproof jacket) as we will be outside for the majority of the field trip.

All Drains Lead to Fish Habitat

Stream of Dreams is coming to Brockton! Have you seen those colourful wooden fish arranged on a community fence? This March, Brockton School is also participating in this community art project.

The Stream of Dreams Murals Society is a non-profit registered Canadian charity founded in 2003 to support the delivery of the Stream of Dreams eco-education programs. Their mission is to educate communities about the life and function of their watersheds, rivers and streams while providing an opportunity for community art.
In preparation for the mural installation, we are looking for 6-10 volunteers to help with the preparation of the wooden fish that the students will be painting. We would also like some volunteers to help with the mural installation (using wire ties to attach the fish to the chain-link fence in front of the school) on Monday, March 22, 2010 (afternoon).

We are looking for volunteers to help with:

- cutting fish shapes out of wood (1/2” plywood) (using a band saw with 1/4” blade, a scroll saw, OR a jig saw) (wood and templates will be provided)

- drilling holes in the wooden fish (1/4” holes)

- painters (paint will be provided)

- sanding wood (sandpaper will be provided)

Please contact me by email, ytogashi@brocktonschool.com, or in person or by phone at the school (604) 929-9201, if you are able to help in any way.

Grade 4 Unit of Inquiry

The grade 4s have started a new unit of inquiry about advertising. There are some resources that we need help with. If you have any old magazines that contain lots of ads, that you would be willing donate we would like them. Also for anyone who has a VHS machine and is able to, we would like TV recordings of different 30 minute shows complete with commercials. Please bring any of these items to the grade 4 classroom. Thank you.
