Primary Years Programme (K-5)

Brockton’s Kindergarten to Grade 5 curriculum is taught within the framework of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Organization’s Primary Years Programme (PYP).

The PYP focuses on the total growth of the developing child, touching hearts as well as minds and encompassing social, physical, emotional and cultural needs in addition to academic development. Through inquiry, students develop an understanding of important concepts, acquire essential skills and knowledge, develop positive attitudes and learn to take socially responsible action.

The programme encompasses the latest research in teaching and learning, enabling teachers to use learning strategies appropriate for the needs of individual students. During the primary years, students build knowledge and understanding through inquiries into six trans-disciplinary themes of global significance, supported and balanced by six subject areas.

Curriculum Framework

The curriculum framework is structured around three interrelated questions:

• What do we want to learn? The written curriculum that incorporates preparation and planning.
• How best will we learn? The taught curriculum that takes advantage of innovative teaching strategies.
• How will we know what we have learned? The learned curriculum that includes individual assessments.

Brockton PYP students receive instruction in all core subjects (Math, Science, Language Arts, Social Studies).  As well, students receive specialized French, Art and Music instruction. 

Languages

The study of French as a second language begins in Kindergarten and is taught by a specialist teacher of French. Our French teacher is well accustomed to having ‘beginners’ in the French class at any level and varied prior experiences of students in language is expected.

Fine and Performing Arts

All PYP students study art and music. These subjects are taught by specialist teachers. With art, in particular, the specialist teacher works in collaboration with classroom teachers to identify curriculum themes currently being studied. The primary music programme, taught by a specialist in early childhood music, integrates rhythm and dance with the vocal aspect of the programme. 

Physical Education

All PYP students take physical education within the school timetable. The curriculum is age appropriate and extends the motor skills and ball handling of the students as well as providing skill development and game experience in a variety of sports typically offered to young people in Canada. In addition, Brockton offers a range of age-appropriate athletic activities in the extracurricular programme at lunch and after school.
