Beyond the Classroom

  • Trying something new
  • Doing what you like to do best
  • Pursuing a hobby
  • Character development
  • Social skill development
  • Meeting teachers in non-classroom settings
  • Activities with children in other grades
  • Simply having a great deal of fun

The Brockton educational experience is not complete without the student becoming involved in the co-curricular programme. Beyond the actual activity itself, it is the mixing with students from other grades, meeting teachers outside of the academic programme and enjoying the coaching of a team, or sponsorship of an activity, by a volunteer parent that brings richness to the overall co-curricular experience. Through these ‘beyond the classroom’ activities our students make new friends, explore new areas of interest and experience one of the core aspects of life at an independent school.

Brockton offers a variety of programmes in the arts and athletics at the mid-day activity period and after school. Competitive athletics is a significant aspect of the programme and Brockton is an active member of GVISSA (Greater Vancouver Independent School Sports Association). Likewise, Brockton invites other small schools in the Lower Mainland to participate in its programmes.

Although it is not mandatory for students to be involved in all ‘beyond the classroom’ programmes, we find that most students do end up wanting to participate. There is something for everyone, and different activities each term. Some activities run throughout the year, while others are seasonal. With these programs we use the phrase: “You never know until you try”. With this in mind a host of rewarding experiences awaits the students.

School Houses

To foster positive relationships amongst the students of all grades, Brockton School also has an inter-house programme. This year-long competitive programme includes inter-house contests (most often at lunch time) in a wide variety of activities ranging from inter-house floor hockey to spelling bees and culminating in the end of year Brockton Sports Day in June. The inter-house competition provides excellent leadership experiences for the senior students in the role of House Captains.

Outdoor Education

The underlying purpose of the Outdoor Education programme at Brockton is to provide experiences that help students learn about themselves and support the development of positive character traits such as: responsibility, care for others, independence, self-confidence, openness to new experiences, self-discipline, enthusiasm, courage, leadership, interpersonal skills, creativity, and concern for health, safety, and fitness. The Outdoor Education programme also gives students opportunities to learn about the natural environment and its sustainability.

The programme is offered to students starting in Grade 4 and is delivered in part through residential outdoor school courses taken off site and through a variety of optional co-curricular activities including hiking, ocean kayaking, canoeing, rock climbing, and cross-country skiing. MYP students have the option to take an elective course in Fitness, Leadership, and Outdoor Education.
